When you grow up,
you may get restless with time,
forgetting how to gnaw this boredom and chime!
How to make paper-planes and let it fly,
stare with mouths open, the stars in the sky!
When you grow up,
you might forget the essence of words!
Pleasure becomes an unworldly treasure,
Grief will be blown beyond brief,
Joy becomes reason to insanely enjoy,
Love will just be a lovers dove!
Muscles may mean to anger and tussle,
Wonder will have nothing under!
God might seem just worth a nod!
When you grow up,
you may even forget how to play
with the sands that sprawl the beach;
with the beetles that fly in with the wind;
with the cycle tyres discarded on the road;
with the scraps of papers and things left around;
with the boy or girl who lives opposite yours;
with your old grandparents who now feel like you did!
When you grow up,
you might forget how to talk to your parents
and how to be happy in their presence!
You may belch at the dinner table
and walk to sleep without a wave!
When you grow up,
you will stop growing with your siblings!
Selfishly letting them stroll away
while you escape with notions of individuality;
your affections drowning in their helplessness!
When you grow up,
you may misinterpret sense and sensitivity;
tantalizing the world, your presence as an obscurity!
When you grow up,
you may lose the point of breathing!
You may want to complement it with smoke,
you may want to stench it with liquor!
You may want your breath taken away by things;
surrendering many a thought along with it!
You may forget that each breath is time;
time that lurches forward in the strangle of your idiocy!
You may forget the balance of things and time;
the time to wake, the time to sleep,
the time to eat, what not to eat,
what not to say and where not to sit!
When you grow up,
education may have left you a conservative;
sculpted your emotions in wood;
corrupted your intelligence for its good;
formidably wiring your brain without a pause,
internally thus shaping a rebel without a cause!
When you grow up
you will never be content but never at loss;
you will not be a servant and never your boss!
When you grow up
you will always see yourselves in others,
but have no kindness for them!
When you grow up, you'll say,
this is how it works; don't be bothersome!
And then you will want to laugh
but you wont, as society is on its watch!
This is how growth grows on us,
when we grow up!
you may get restless with time,
forgetting how to gnaw this boredom and chime!
How to make paper-planes and let it fly,
stare with mouths open, the stars in the sky!
